ASTRONOMY DAY 2004
Observing the night sky with binoculars or telescope can be a lonely experience. Mind you there are numerous astronomy clubs located throughout the land. From time to time we do sometimes gather together for group observing at a dark location away from city light.
Here we see a great exchange of views via different instruments and eyepieces. But, for the most part, it's simply between you and the celestial landscape above. I have spent many hours with my eye glued to the telescope and no one around to share these wonderful sights. Astronomy is a quite and serine hobby, but sometimes you feel like waking up the neighbours.
Every year around this time, a special day is set aside for this reason - it's called International Astronomy Day. Founded in California in 1973, over 30 countries celebrate as amateur astronomers and star gazers take the sky to the public.
On April 24, 2004 astronomy clubs and societies around the world will be setting up exhibits and displays in shopping malls, museums and stores. This is a great opportunity to ask astronomers that nagging question or seek advice on a future telescope purchase.
The Ottawa Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will be setting up at Chapter Bookstore - Pinecrest location starting at 10 a.m. and run throughout the day. Small presentations will be shown inside the lecture room.
Tables will be covered with astronomy brochures, exhibits, a meteor collection and much more. Local astronomer will be on hand to speak to as well as a few telescopes specially designed with safe solar filters will be looking at the sun - our closest star.
At dusk and weather permitting there will be a star party in the parking lot till 10 p.m. Among the wonders of the night will be four bright planets and a crescent moon. Admission and handouts are absolutely free.
