THE
BLUE BOX (Recycled Ideas)

I was listening to an intriguing interview on the radio
today. It was about gravity and the universe. This man had
an interesting theory, he claims that gravity is counteracted
by another physical force, levity, and this is what keeps
the universe from collapsing. What a capital idea, why didn't
I think of that?
I expect that this theory will spin off a great many new
research projects. Take black holes for instance, wherever
there is a local deficiency in levity, gravity consumes
everything and forms a nascent black hole. It's easy to
see these things in the process of formation, just look
at banks and political parties. Bankers are notoriously
lacking in levity, and when you put your money there it's
like putting it in a black hole. Bankers take your money,
lever it by at least a factor of ten, get about 100% return
on it and give you maybe 2%. In any logical world that would
be hilarious, but bankers consume and are consumed. They
are consumed by gravity and they consume your money.
Political parties are another place where gravity is the
norm. You rarely see a politician with any levity. The result?
See it and weep, money being sucked into black holes. This
is called taxation and we've been so conditioned to it that
we forget we are simply throwing money away.
Since we are on the topic of interesting new theories,
I have a couple more for you. I read in the Globe that scientists
were scouting around a mountain in Mexico looking for a
suitably elevated site to install a special telescope. However,
suspicious peasants destroyed their equipment believing
that it prevented the rain from falling. That same day the
rains came. Pretty hard to argue with experimental evidence
like that.
Has anyone ever noticed that the two world wars and the
cold war corresponded in time to the steadily increasing
popularity of the Macintosh apple? It's true. Then in the
80s we started seeing an increasing variety of apples, Spies,
Cortlands, Empire, and even some Wealthies and Russets.
Along with this healthy increase in the available pomes,
we have seen a change in human fortunes. We have experienced
an end to wars, the advent of the computer and the longest
bull market on record. Don't try to tell me this is simply
coincidence.
I rest my case.
