It's remarkable how much the world has changed during my
lifetime. I can remember a world with draft horses instead
of tractors, and a society where no one worked on Sunday
no matter how pressing the need. All that has changed, these
days horses are only for show, and if there's a job that
needs doing on Sunday, well, the better the day, the better
the deed.
It doesn't stop there, nowadays everything is up for discussion,
even what we would have considered the ultimate taboos during
my earlier days. Just as an example, I remember when families
consisted uniquely of a father, a mother, and children.
We didn't even include the pets, they belonged in the barn
with the livestock. Now it seems that a family is any two
people who want to live together. That wouldn't be so bad
I suppose, but they want all the benefits that go along
with the old definition of a family. The first reaction
of us traditionalists is to rebel, but on sober second thought,
I'm beginning to see it as an opportunity. Think about it
for a minute, if spousal benefits are now available in same
sex relationships, what about us single people who have
learned to live with ourselves.
Hah! Hadn't thought of that, had you? If I've learned to
live with myself then I'm in a same sex relationship and
by God I intend to have my just dues from the system, like
everyone else. I expect I'll get turned down at first. They'll
probably say, "If you've learned to live with yourself,
well and good, two can live as cheaply as one." This
is nonsense, the only two that can live as cheaply as one
is a horse and an English sparrow, and that's a trans-species
relationship. We aren't concerned with them yet, they can
wait until after the next election. Besides, if two can
live as cheaply as one, let's be logical, that's the same
as saying that one can live as expensively as two.
Finally we single people will get the recognition we deserve
from the community, and hopefully some financial support
to give our lives more meaning. We want to be accepted as
viable family units, and take our proper place in society.
We want the stigma of single life removed. We want to go
into restaurants and not have to sit at the bar. We want
to change our minds and not be considered two-faced. We
want to sleep in a double bed without feeling inappropriate.
We're all going to have to get together to make this thing
work. Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Let me rephrase that!
